Brief Description
If you do not maintain your Enthusiasm level is will slowly decrease eventually making you loose your levels.
The rate at which your enthusiasm will be gained is determined by 3 factors these are:
- Skills
- Interests
- Pre-Destined Hobby
Skills
Every hobby has a related skill, the higher the level of your skill, the quicker your enthusiasm is gained.
This is a chart to display what effect the amount of skill points will have on your Sims enthusiasm gain speed:

Interest
As with the skills, your Sims interest in the hobby also plays a big role. Depending what their interest rate is, so the rate at which your enthusiasm is gained will increase.

Dreaming about Hobby
Sims who pass the level 3 mark of their enthusiasm will now be able to dream about a hobby when they sleeping, the best part of this is that it actually increases your Sims enthusiasm points. Although it does not increase the points as much as actually peforming the hobby, it does stave off some of the entusiasm decay.
Passive Absorbtion
A Sim who is in a room where another Sim is pefrming a hobby will passively gain points, which of the same hobby the other Sim is peforming.
This how ever will not work anymore once a Sim reaches level 5 of that hobby.
Every Sim is born with a hobby, this is influence by the traits that they are born with. Sims do not know what their hobby is until they discover it.
When a Sim discovers what his hobby is, the enthusiasm points will highlight in silver as shown below:

Just as easy as it is to gain points, so it is to loose them - If your Sims do not mainitn their hobby, their points will start to drop, eventually making you loose an Enthusiasm Level:

Decay rate is per an hour.
If your Sim looses enough points to drop a level, for example from a level 4 to level 3 - if this event happened at 10Am, it will only reflect at 4PM giving you enough time to build more points.
